A mysterious death leads Carter to suspect foul play, but several individuals each have a vested interest in ensuring that he doesn't delve too deeply.
To help them beat a deadline, researchers in Section 5 accelerate their bodies with a modified form of Ritalin, allowing them to move faster than the eye can see, but with tragic consequences for one of the group. Sheriff Carter is called to a strange accident on the road, involving a car and "something going 500+ miles per hour." When he tries to investigate, Stark shuts him down and takes the evidence back to Global Dynamics. With the aid of Henry and Taggart, however, he is able to piece together the truth. Zoe Carter is seen at school where the cheerleaders speak in polysyllabic words, and the "nerds" bully the "jocks." "My God," she says, "it's nerd-vana." She is attracted to Dylan (Tom Tames), because he seems normal, unlike her other genius classmates in Eureka. Jack is attacked at superspeed inside his house, and given a warning to "Back Off!" scrawled on the wall of his home. He thinks he has found a clue back at the Global Dynamics when in the cafeteria he sees some of the researchers consuming large amounts of high-carb foods. He quarantines the researchers, and waits for them to break down, which one of them literally does, in a slow-motioned confession. Jack is kidnapped (while driving his patrol car), and taken to a deserted place. It turns out that Dylan, the son of two well-known scientists, created the drug to keep up with everyone else at school. Carter tries to reason with him, but the young man takes away his gun and threatens to stop him. As Dylan rushes Jack, Carter takes a baseball from his pocket and beans him.
Afterwards, the townsfolk gather to play virtual baseball, to Sheriff Carter's mixed reaction.
Henry: "Someone, or something, turned our guy into Roadrunner!"
Carter: I don't know what's going on, but my gut says its bad.
Taggart: His guts should have told you that.
Carter: Okay, let’s say someone literally is speed-freaking. Uh, what signs would I look for?
Henry: Besides running at 600 miles an hour?
Carter: Put the gun down, Dylan.
Dylan: Why? So I can go to jail for the rest of my life?
Zoe: Damn straight!
Carter: Not helping!
