"Founder's Day" is the first episode of the fourth season of Eureka.

Synopsis[]

The town holds Founder's Day celebrating the town's sixtieth anniversary, with vintage costumes and all sorts of old-style props. Do some people take it too far?

Plot[]

Tess dumps Jack by hologram. He goes for a run just as the town is preparing for “Founders Day,” an annual celebration. Allison assigns him to help out with the prep for the event, and Jack goes on his morning run. Zane asks Jo to marry him, but she panics, and he storms off in a huff.

Out in the woods, Jack’s phone rings, and while he’s talking about it, he notices that the forest is shorter now than it used to be. He flags down a 1947 car thinking that it's Henry inside driving. However, the car is being driven by Dr. Trevor Grant.

He’s taken to “Camp Eureka,” the precursor of the town, and it’s 1947. Two P-38s fly overhead. An army major KOs Jack, and he wakes up chained to a bed in the infirmary. Allison is impersonating a nurse and helps him escape and finds him an army uniform to wear. While debating what to do next, Jo turns up and fights a bunch of army guys trying to take her down. One guy is slightly killed in the fracas, but Allison is able to bring him back by jerry-rigging a defibrillator from jumper cables. Grant is quite impressed, since neither CPR nor the jumpstarting of the heart has been invented yet.

Jo is thrown in the guardhouse with a naked Fargo, and Henry is working in the motor pool. They reason that it was a combination of solar flares and their cellphones that sent them back in time, from the 2010 peak of solar flare activity to the previous peak in 1947.

The Major decides that they’re all spies, but after hearing one of Jack's comments about the baseball game come true, Grant starts to believe them. After Henry and Fargo manage to mix and match 1947 and 2010 tech to connect all their phones with the bridge device so they can get sent back to their time. Grant admits that he put a satellite up a decade before the one in the history books. When the satellite goes out of range, Carter is sent up to re-aim the receiving antenna. So, he climbs to the top of the tower with a big crank and fixes it.

Jack realizes that he doesn’t have his phone with him at the last minute, and he’s going to be left in the past. Allison and he kiss. When she travels into the future, he’s brought along with her.

Everyone turns up where they were when they came unstuck in time, but they quickly realize that the future they came back to isn’t quite the one they left: Jack and Tess are still together, Zane and Jo aren't an have never been together; Henry is married to Grace, a woman he'd just met in the previous timeline, and Allison’s son Kevin isn't autistic anymore.

Dr. Trevor Grant had Jack’s phone and was transported into the future with them. [1]

Memorable Quotes[]

Allison: [watching Jo fight multiple soldiers] Okay this is really bad!
Carter: Yeah, for them! She's small, but scrappy.

Carter: You're here.
Henry: Yeah.
Carter: Working.
Henry: Hiding in plain sight. I mean, Eureka was always progressive, but nobody looks twice at a black mechanic. But still - oh, man, amazing, isn't it? [laughs, looks around past Eureka in awe]
Carter: You do realize that you, me, Allison and Jo are all stuck here?
Henry: And Fargo. They caught him streaking through the camp.
Carter: Of course they did.

Dr. Trevor Grant: We have a woman in custody, she needs her injuries treated. And there's this naked kid, needs some clothes.
Allison: I would be happy to take a look... At the injuries, not the naked kid.
Dr. Grant: Glad you clarified that.

Henry: Don't break that.
Carter: Yeah, that would suck.
Dr. Grant: Suck what?

Notes[]

  • Founder's Day takes places on April 15 - the same day that Jackie Robinson's debut in Major League Baseball. Dr. Trevor Grant is listening to the baseball game on the radio when he first meets Jack Carter.
  • The Eureka 5 travel to Camp Eureka on April 15, 1947. The town was founded three years later.
  • Fargo claims he arrived in the pose and 'clothing optional' status of the original Terminator. However, the only truth to his story is that he arrived sans clothes.
  • In the recap at the beginning of the episode there is a breakup scene between Carter and Tess that was never seen prior to that point. The show's producers had planned to open the season premiere with a three-minute scene featuring the two characters, however it was cut for time, so they opted to have the breakup in the recap instead.[2]
    • (Streaming service issues: currently at Peacock) Unfortunately, with the ability to skip recaps in many streaming services, this means that people who watch the show streaming, will probably miss it, unless otherwise notified. It is the last part of the recap so it's easy to rewind a short burst after skipping it in order to watch it.
