Season 2 Season 4

"What Goes Around, Comes Around" is the eighteenth episode of the third season of Eureka.

Synopsis[]

Zoe is offered early admission to Harvard. Meanwhile, strange magnetic effects permeate the town, wreaking the traditional widespread havoc.

Plot[]

Open the morning after Tess' third sleepover with Carter. Zoe comes down and opens a startling piece of mail: She's gotten early admission into a special pre-med undergraduate program at Harvard. It means she will leave for college a full year early and Carter is shaken by the news.

Lucas is also upset, telling Henry the "plan" was for them to go to college at the same time. The two spot a disturbing development when analyzing the data taken from the fake Kim: "Nemesis," Henry says gravely.

On the way into Café Diem Jo reassures Carter that the opportunity for Zoe is too great to pass up. Fargo and a few other nerds tell Carter and Jo about Nemesis: It is a star theorized to be in orbit with the Sun. It crosses the earth's orbit every 65 years, and they now believe it could cause an extinction-level event in 2,000 years. The problem, as Larry sees it, that GD is about to test a super-collider.

There is an explosion during the super-collider test which very nearly kills several staffers. Fargo and Zane each blame each other but conclude that it must have been tampered with.

Carter and Jo question Larry about the incident. He says he had nothing to do with the explosion, blames it on dark energy and complains the accident ruined his "fem bot."

Fargo tells Julia the accident has made him adjust his priorities. They hear a strange noise.

Before she started dating Carter, Tess got a job opportunity in Australia for after Allison returns from maternity leave. Carter asks her about the collider accident, and they rush to Fargo. They find him wedged into the ceiling. Nobody knows why he would be up there and a few moments later he comes crashing to the floor.

At the biotech dive finals, Zoe is being controlled by one her friends. Zoe complains that Lucas didn't show up for the event.

Tess wants to discuss Australia, but Carter blows her off with "whatever makes you happy."

Lucas tells Carter there was no dark energy leak. Henry comes in and tells them Fargo is anemic and has been taking iron supplements his entire life. Somehow a bunch of electromagnetic energy was produced, likely at 10:06, which was when Carter's watch froze.

Zoe is nervous about the dive. Carter shows up to watch. Just before the dive the water begins bubbling. Once she hits the water the surface catches on fire. Carter dives in and grabs her.

Henry tells Carter a hot spot of electromagnetic energy was above the pool, and cases the water to bubble. Carter suggests perhaps Nemesis has arrived early.

Jo explains to Zoe how much Carter will miss her and that she should discuss the issue with her dad. Lucas walks into the café and apologizes for not being at the meet. He says he had a good reason for not being there and they leave together. Fargo has just skydived, knocking one of his death-defying feats off his bucket list. All the metal in the café (including Fargo) begins flying around.

Henry says the recent occurrences are a massive magnetic polar disturbance. They wonder what might have caused this incident.

Back in his apartment Lucas tells Zoe he is worried about losing her. She tells him she wants them to sleep together. Right as they start fooling around Carter, Zoe and Henry burst into the room. Henry thinks Lucas' pulse amplifier is to blame. They see that a new magnetic pole has formed above Lucas' apartment.

Lucas tells everybody he used Kim's data to simulate what would happen when Nemesis passes Earth. His amplifier which he never turned on was to lock the poles in place. They think the super-collider test caused the pole to be created. He thought if he found a solution for Nemesis, Henry would write him a recommendation for Harvard the way he did for Zoe. If they can't find a way to break the cycle the planet will experience a complete polar reversal; an extinction-level event.

While on patrol Jo sees mailboxes and stop signs beginning to shake. They fly out of the ground and attach themselves to her cruiser.

Zane suggests firing a missile with a positron payload into the new pole. As he says that the towns electrical grid shuts down.

Carter interrupts Fargo and Julia fooling around. Carter grabs his model plane Martha which was not affected by the earlier electromagnetic surges.

While preparing to send Martha in, Lucas tells them they must switch the poles on his amplifier before sending Martha in.

Carter has them use the diving technology on him. He enters Lucas' apartment to switch the amplifier. Tess controls his body and moves him over the amplifier.

Zane and Fargo lose communication with Tess and send Martha in too early. Carter is still able to switch the amplifier and escape just before Martha fires the positron beam into Lucas' apartment.

Despite his shenanigans, Lucas' inventions will come up huge when Nemesis arrives in several thousand years.

Carter apologizes for his weirdness but tells her the job is too good for her to pass up. She suggests he come with her. He says he will think about it, and they kiss.

Zoe packs up for Harvard. Henry helped get Lucas into MIT early so they will be close to each other in Massachusetts. Zoe thanks him for "never giving up on me" as music begins to play.

Carter tells Jo he's okay with everything. She tells him a package arrived for him. It is a plane ticket to Australia. The phone rings with Allison on the line and he tells her: "I was just about to call you." [1]

Memorable Quotes[]

Jack: Nemesis? Is that real or is that like a super villain from your Fantasy Justice League?
Fargo: Oh it's real, and that is an awesome name.

Jack: So the laws of physics are in peril, my daughter's moving out and the world's coming to an end?
Jo: I say, have the muffin.

Notes[]

  • Zoe Carter was given early admission to Harvard so the actress, Jordan Hinson, could take a role on Kelsey Grammer's sitcom, Hank, but that show was cancelled after five episodes aired (nine were filmed).
  • If Jack had truly lost all his motor skills/muscle control, his body would have almost reacted the same way as if he'd died. Since he and his brain are not in control of his body, he would have been unable to talk because that takes muscle control. The muscles that help retain urine and feces would also immediately relax. This means he would have, not only urinated, but defecated as well. It's understandable why they wouldn't show that happening though.
  • It's rather strange that as a video game player, Fargo would not have thought of Nemesis as a sci-fi name considering the fact that the Resident Evil: Nemesis game came out in 1999. However, even if he hadn't/wouldn't play a horror game (which Fargo really would), the movie Star Trek: Nemesis came out in December of 2002 and he would have definitely watched that.
